Here are a few facts you didn’t know about your favourite brand!
It started with family
In 1926, Pierre Draps began making chocolates in his confectionery workshop in Brussels, seeking to delight his young Belgian wife. Work in Pierre’s at-home kitchen factory quickly became a family affair, with his wife and their four children helping to produce, finish, package, and deliver the chocolate confectionery delights all around Brussels.
Godiva Iconic Heart
After the senior Draps died in 1937, the younger Pierre Draps stepped in to further develop the chocolates and with his brother Joseph, the siblings eventually opened the first Godiva store on Boulevard Léopold II in Brussels in 1945. A year later, Pierre Jr. developed the Truffe Originale (now called the Original Dark 1946 Truffle), a rich chocolate mousse encased in dark chocolate and dipped in cocoa powder, which remains a best-seller to this day.
Godiva Gold Discovery
The brand is inspired by an 11th Century Rebel
The Legend of Lady Godiva deeply inspires The Godiva brand. The company is named in her honour and the Lady herself can be seen on Godiva chocolates, packaging and signage worldwide.
Legend has it that her husband Leofric, Earl of Mercia, had a reputation for imposing high taxes on the peasants of present-day Coventry, England. Her compassion for her husband’s subjects led her to repeatedly ask that the taxes be lightened. Overcome with Greed, Leofric claimed that he would reduce taxes if Lady Godiva would ride naked through the town.
Godiva Milk Chocolate
The rebellious Lady Godiva set off the next morning, clad only in her flowing tresses and rode through the entire town. The people who she swore to protect from abysmally high taxes, stayed indoors and refused to look upon her nakedness. Eventually, the taxes were lowered, and Lady Godiva became a symbol of boldness and courage.
Godiva Chocolate Selection
The values associated with Lady Godiva such as boldness, generosity, and a pioneering spirit still inform Godiva's ethos. Today, the name Godiva is now synonymous with a luxurious chocolate experience.
it's ALL about Pralines
Although Godiva cannot be accredited with the creation of the Praline, Pierre Draps revolutionized the bonbon by mixing ground almonds and hazelnuts with caramelised sugar and encasing them in Belgian chocolate to create Godiva's first pralines. This decadent piece of candy was what eventually launched the Godiva empire.
