Arise fashion week Alumni and Temple Muse stockist designer Ian Audifferen is the creative mind behind the brand, Tzar. Originally a menswear brand, Tzar now caters to a female following that grew as a result of the brand’s androgynous aesthetic; a new direction that was evident in the collection presented at Arise 2019.

We interrupted his sabbatical on the East Coast of the States to get a little ‘slice of life’ taste from the man behind the brand.

Five random facts

If you were not a designer what would you be?

I would be a travel journalist.

What do you collect?

I used to collect eyewear when I was much younger (haha much younger like I’m that old) but they either got stolen or I gave them out to friends or I managed to lose them, so now I collect memories with my photography.

When you have free time, where are you and what are you doing?

When I have free time, I’m on my bed trolling on the internet with my finsta (fake Instagram account) or taking a long shower, I love long showers.

What was the last book you read?

 Roots by Alex Haley.

What did you learn from your mother?

I learnt cleanliness and diplomacy from my mother.

Music or silence when you work? If music (please be music), what is on the playlist?

It’s a mix. I work in silence or with music depending on my mood. If I do listen to music, my playlist can include anything from Maria Callas or Disclosure to Kanye west or Nicki Minaj.

Your current style inspiration (person/ place /thing)?

Currently it’s French blogger, Samy Portejoie and German blogger, Sandra Sauceda.

Favourite item in your wardrobe?

That would be my Yohji Yamamoto jacket.

Your favourite piece/ look from your last collection?

My favourite piece from my AW 19 is the copper coloured silk ensemble with crepe over coat . Absolutely love it!

Favourite piece of art?

Anything by Alexander Calder has my heart. Having said that my absolute favourite is Damien Hirst’s ‘Gone but not Forgotten’, an installation of a mammoth skeleton coated in gold. I had the pleasure of seeing it up close for the first time recently, it was magnificent!

What is your greatest skill?

Can’t say it here but let’s just say, I’m so good at it, and photography of course.

Your greatest shortcoming?

Procrastination. I am the Lord of it.

Do you cook?

I think I have mageirocophobia. It’s when you’re terrified of cooking.

 Pet Peeve?

I have so many pet peeves but the top two on my list is lateness and my time being wasted. It irks the hell out of me.

Swim with sting rays in Bora Bora.
See the aurora borealis in the Arctic.
